Alexander & Schmidt Names John Natale its Chief Executive Officer

Alexander & Schmidt of Yarmouth, Maine, has promoted John M. Natale, MS, CPCU, ARM, ALCM, to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the company. Co-founder and current CEO, Jim Schmidt, will become Chairman, and will continue to be involved in the business.

For 36 years, Alexander & Schmidt has provided risk analysis and risk management services to the largest national and regional Property & Casualty Insurance Carriers. Currently performing 38,000 risk assessments per year, the company has built over 500 professional risk assessment systems, serving all 50 countries.

Natale joined Alexander & Schmidt as Senior Vice President of Business Development in May of 2018. Prior to joining A&S, he served as Vice President-Marketing for Concord Group Insurance Companies, affiliated with Auto-Owners Insurance Company. Previously, with Royal & SunAlliance, Natale was Branch Vice President-Northern New England (Bedford, NH) and Loss Control Manager in Syracuse, New York. He earned a Master of Science in Insurance Management from Boston University.

“We were fortunate four years ago when John joined our leadership team as Vice President of Business Development,” said Jim Schmidt. “He has done a great job in this area. But what we found in John is a leader and manager of exceptional ability, in all the key aspects of a fast-growing company, which makes him the perfect candidate to be our next CEO. “

Since joining the company, Natale has been involved in the significant growth of the business, as well as the creation of new ways of doing Loss Control services. In 2019, A&S acquired Safety Evaluations of America, LLC (SEA), of Lawrenceville, GA. The acquisition expanded the scope of the combined company and added expertise in the Builder’s Risk and Ocean Cargo segments, among others.

On the technology front, Natale has led innovation in the company’s use of video streaming for risk assessment, as well as the integration of new third-party data applications. These, and other advancements, have reduced response times and increased the depth of detail and documentation, all designed to help Carriers make better underwriting decisions.

The growth of the video security monitoring division has been phenomenal for Alexander & Schmidt, according to Natale, with more than 50 Loss Control professionals dedicated to the division. The company has integrated its video monitoring system into its risk assessment software and is now able to review recorded comments and input as part of reporting.

As an independent business with two generations of the Schmidt family working in the company, it is a big step to name a non-family member as CEO. Marella Schmidt-Baker is the company’s Vice President, Lea Schmidt is the Director of Business Development, and Lindsey Schmidt is the Director of Support Services. While Schmidt’s younger members have more of a leadership role, Natale has been focused on building the overall strength of the company.

Reflecting on the change in the leadership of the company, Schmidt-Baker said, “My father, Jim, brought the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit that has helped Alexander & Schmidt reach where it is today as a respected and leading global Loss provider. My sisters and I are excited to continue working with John, and to grow and develop Alexander & Schmidt, into the next generation.”

Natale recognizes the challenges of taking over the role of CEO from a founder and highly successful, long-time leader. “I appreciate the work Jim has done at Alexander & Schmidt and look forward to continuing our work together. The team here is very passionate about, and committed to, the management of High Loss,” he said. “As a manager and leader, one looks forward to an opportunity like this – to help grow, strengthen and strengthen the business in the future. This is a unique career opportunity.
