How Mercury Insurance’s Special Investigations Unit Finds Fraudulent Claims

ANGEL, July 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Fraud cases against insurance companies may seem innocuous, since the victims are large corporations that seem to have a lot of money behind them. However, it is all people who are being taken advantage of in these situations.

Warning #1: Repetitive

The accident occurred when the insured’s vehicle swerved to the left and hit the plaintiff’s vehicle causing it to collide with another vehicle. The plaintiff was supposed to be in the second car and asked the attorney to recover the injuries.

The Mercury branch manager noted the time and date stamp on the x-ray films sent on behalf of the claimant were taken before the time of the loss. There was a match in the system showing the pre-motorcycle collision and the same attorney as the current attorney represented the plaintiff in the first case. By interviewing the claimant and visiting the hospital where the records were made, the investigator confirmed that the x-ray reports were made. The investigator met with the insurance attorney who, without being presented with all the evidence, decided to drop the case.

The Angels The district attorney’s office requested an accounting of the requested costs including the cost of the forensic expert and a schedule of the time spent on the investigation. A letter was sent to the public prosecutor in the case indicating that the amount was several thousand dollars.

Appellant, an employee of the Department of Justice State of California, used their official email address to send invoices made to their own account, which were eventually sent to the money changer. The complainant was interviewed by the SIU and after being presented with the evidence obtained during the investigation, the complainant admitted that the invoices were falsified to benefit the policy.

The SIU reported the fraud to the Department of Insurance which led to further investigation. A joint investigation by Mercury and the Department of Insurance led to a conviction for fraudulently issuing a certificate of insurance.
