How Mercury Insurance’s Special Investigations Unit Finds Fraudulent Claims

Mercury Insurance protects policyholders and keeps premiums low by staying one step ahead of fraudsters.

ANGEL, July 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Fraud cases against insurance companies may seem innocuous, since the victims are large corporations that seem to have a lot of money behind them. However, it is all people who are being taken advantage of in these situations.

“People may think that unless their information is stolen and used illegally, a person who wants to defraud an insurance company will not directly affect them,” he said. Pete Galati, Director of the Mercury Insurance Special Investigations Unit (SIU). “This can’t be solved in reality. Fraudulent insurance claims hurt policyholders. $700 more every year. The Mercury’s SIU team is always on the lookout for criminals who want to steal from our wallets by posting fake news. Staying one step ahead of the pack is what helps Mercury maintain some of the lowest fees on the market. “

The following are examples of how Mercury has thwarted fraudsters looking for a big payday:

Warning #1: Repetitive

The accident occurred when the insured’s vehicle swerved to the left and hit the plaintiff’s vehicle causing it to collide with another vehicle. The plaintiff was supposed to be in the second car and asked the attorney to recover the injuries.

The Mercury branch manager noted the time and date stamp on the x-ray films sent on behalf of the claimant were taken before the time of the loss. There was a match in the system showing the pre-motorcycle collision and the same attorney as the current attorney represented the plaintiff in the first case. By interviewing the claimant and visiting the hospital where the records were made, the investigator confirmed that the x-ray reports were made. The investigator met with the insurance attorney who, without being presented with all the evidence, decided to drop the case.

The Angels The district attorney’s office requested an accounting of the requested costs including the cost of the forensic expert and a schedule of the time spent on the investigation. A letter was sent to the public prosecutor in the case indicating that the amount was several thousand dollars.

“The crook stopped in his tracks and innocent law enforcement officers were protected,” Galassi said.

A request was made $2,200 A person’s belongings are stolen from their car. While processing the claims, several red flags appeared. Investigations revealed that the complainant had made two previous referrals to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) on a car that had been stolen and the theft of his property by various insurance companies, as well as a third investigation on another car that had been burnt.

During the SIU’s investigation, nine receipts and invoices sent from an online retailer were falsified and altered. The invoice numbers that were sent were correct, but the items purchased on those invoices were false. Upon closer inspection the tax rates and fonts on the invoices also differed. Appellant, an employee of the Department of Justice State of California, used their official email address to send invoices made to their own account, which were eventually sent to the money changer. The complainant was interviewed by the SIU and after being presented with the evidence obtained during the investigation, the complainant admitted that the invoices were falsified to benefit the policy.

The SIU reported the fraud to the Department of Insurance which led to further investigation. A joint investigation by Mercury and the Department of Insurance led to a conviction for fraudulently issuing a certificate of insurance.
