Need cyber insurance? Send data

Hello. and welcome to Protocol Enterprise! Today: how cloud providers are working with customers and insurance companies to share operational data, why veteran Google Chip just joined the new silicon photonics program and how CISA is completing a new system in response to cyberattacks and vulnerabilities.

How to prepare cyber insurance

Cybersecurity insurance, which provides financial protection against damages caused by cyber attacks, seemed like a good idea at the time.

Then 2021 happened.

  • Cyber insurance has been thrown off-kilter by ransomware attacks that have prompted insurers to quickly raise rates and charge back claims, especially since last year. a big wave ransomware attacks.
  • Many believe that cyber insurance will not be sustainable without providing insurance coverage within the IT environment of the policyholder, providing information on the security of the customer.
  • And the big cloud providers have that data.

Several insurance companies are getting it that working directly with cloud providers can be a better way to provide services and set prices.

  • For example, the major insurance company Munich Re, has been working with Google Cloud and Allianz insurance process which aims to provide customers with lower costs, less cyber risk and more transparency throughout the process.
  • “Visibility has not been our strongest strategy in the cyber insurance market to date,” said Bob Parisi, head of cyber solutions for North America at Munich Re. “But being transparent and data-driven is probably the way to increase stability in the cyber insurance market.”
  • Meanwhile, Microsoft said united and At-Bay on the process of focusing on using Microsoft 365 from the cloud.
  • And AWS has it agreed and Cowbell Cyber and Swiss Re to provide insurance for services running in its cloud.

For cloud providers, cyber insurance programs each serves as an incentive for customers to rely more on their cloud services.

  • According to Microsoft and At-Bay, for customers who use protection such as MFA, savings on cyber insurance can reach 15%, compared to At-Bay’s regular rates.
  • The Google Cloud plan offers support for heavy workloads running in its cloud that are greater than what can be found in any other IT insurance and at lower prices.
  • In other words, the more you use Google Cloud, the more benefits you get for your cyber insurance, according to Monica Shokrai, the company’s head of business security and insurance.
  • Ultimately, for both insurers and customers, “we are providing a solution that helps them in a very difficult area at this time,” Shokrai told me.

Seeing the light

A promising new technology is emerging that has the potential to improve the performance of large chiplet designs, while at the same time reducing the amount of energy required to operate them and the heat generated as a byproduct. Called silicon photonics, the basic idea is to move data around chips using light along with electricity, a technique that can be used in other new concepts such as the chiplet.

Big companies like Intel are actively exploring, but they’ve also attracted startups trying to create new things that focus on data, too. One called Lightmatter has done well attracting former engineers from Intel and now Google.

Last weekLightmatter has hired former Google AI chip engineer Richard Ho to lead its silicon engineering division, where he will oversee the company’s AI accelerator and communications technology. recently demonstrated at a chip conference.

Ho told the Protocol that he left Google because it became clear that the amount of heat generated by the system reached a point where it was difficult to cool and provide power. Silicon photonics technology represents a very different way to break through that barrier and achieve new power and functionality.

“But we’re still early in understanding what this means, and the best chip-to-chip technology,” Ho said. “And I think what we’ve seen here is the convergence of silicon photonics being in a position where they can control that market, and the innovators that are coming in to use it properly, to be able to use it.”
