For example, if your property has a long driveway, make sure the contractor is prepared to shovel snow there. Tip #2: Adjust your thermostat settings

Maintaining the right temperature in your home or office is important for the comfort of your family or employees in the winter, as well as protecting your home’s pipes and plumbing.

According to the Department of Energy & Environment, thermostats must be installed at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter when the place is crowded. Whenever the place is not occupied (for example when the family is on vacation or the company is on work schedule), the temperature can drop to anywhere between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit, but it should not be reduced or completely turned off.

Maintaining 60-65 degrees can prevent pipes from drying out and prevent water damage to your property.

Many new homes and offices come with adjustable thermostats that allow you to schedule temperature changes or adjustments from your smartphone. However, older buildings will rely on manually lowering and raising the temperature. Be sure to find out what type of thermostat your place has and prepare before the temperature drops outside.

Tip #3: Look for interior spaces

Many homeowners can have more energy bills in the winter due to increased heating. Keep costs down and protect your home’s interior from outdoor elements like snow and wind by doing a thorough inspection of your home’s interior before winter hits.

Look for cracks in walls and loose windows or frames that can allow warm air to enter. Also, check the insulation of the building and make sure there are no holes that could cause additional heat.

Snow that accumulates on your roof can permanently damage your property. Fortunately, there are steps you can take now to prevent this.

Although the snow is soft, the snow is packed. Although factors affect the weight of each snowfall (such as snow wetness and snow texture), an average of one inch of snow falls as approx. one pound per square foot. This means that a roof of 2,000 sq. ft. and 3 inches of snow can hold about 6,000 lbs.

A roof that is poorly maintained or damaged by supports, shingles, etc., can often collapse from this extreme pressure. For this reason, you should assess your roof before the snow falls and make sure it is ready to withstand the weight of the snow.

Tip #5: Stay on top of the ice

Although more common in the north, frozen dams can wreak havoc on homeowners and businesses during the winter months.

Freezing occurs when the snow freezes on the roof, melts during the heat of the day, and then freezes again at night. This cycle can continue for several days, causing the water to melt under the shingles on the roof. Most of the time, this water comes out of the roof, the roof, and the walls, damaging not only the structure of the building but also its interior.
