BRANCHVILLE, NJ, July 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Seventy-seven percent of US homeowners plan to take at least one vacation between July and December 2022to a a new lesson governed by Selective Insurance, and 44% plan to travel for a week or more. While 59% of US homeowners have a home security system or device, less than half (49%) use one to protect their vacant home while on vacation. The findings are part of an online survey of more than 1,400 US homeowners The Harris Poll conducted by Selective.

Locking all their windows (68%) is the most common home security measure used by US homeowners to protect their vacant homes. Other preventative measures include having their home inspected (61%), turning on the electricity meter (39%), turning off the water (21%), and hiring a home inspector (13%).
“Holidays are a great time to make new memories, but they are quickly forgotten if you return home to a damaged or stolen home. Smart home security planning before you leave is just as important as packing the right things in your suitcase,” he said. The survey also revealed that younger US homeowners, ages 18-34 (60%) and 35-44 (64%), are more likely to use a security device or device to keep their homes safe while vacationing than those ages 55-64. (41%) and 65+ (34%). Additionally, more U.S. homeowners living in urban areas (63%) use a security or safety device during their vacation than those in rural areas (49%) or rural areas (31%).
Selective’s survey found geographic differences in US homeowners’ vacation plans and use of safety equipment or tools while away:
Half of homeowners in the Northeast (50%) plan to take a weekend or longer vacation between July and December compared to just 38% of Midwest homeowners.
Homeowners in the South (51%) and Midwest (58%) are more likely to use a security device or device while on vacation than those in the Northeast (40%) and Midwest (42%).

The survey was conducted online internally United States and The Harris Poll on behalf of Selective Insurance from June 23 – June 27, 2022, among 2,053 US adults aged 18 and over, of whom 1,444 are homeowners.
